Who we are

IDRU – the Internationalized Domain Resolution Union – aims to make the Internet accessible in all the world's many script writing systems. That means you will be able to access the Internet in your native language.

A large majority of the world's population use a writing script different from what to date has been necessary, for access. Now IDRU begins to make Internet access possible for the entire world.

To do that, IDRU enables web addresses that are completely in the native script - today. For a fuller description, see IDN.IDN to the right. As one result, native linguistic communities will be in charge of their own destiny on the web. Then, IDRU connects these individual linguistic groups together, so that citizens in each script group can also access other languages. Now the world can truly connect.

This requires both a devolution and some coordination – at the same time. See Policy, to the right. The IDRU Mission statement discusses fully – click above.

IDRU launches in seven societies to begin (click Map to the right) with about a half billion users. The launch Press release, to the right, is available in 13 different native language scripts. If you would like to bring Internet access to your language, we invite inquiry at "Add your script."

Those participating in IDRU are the signatories to the application for an IDN gTLD Constituency, in the GNSO. These are the signatories. As you see, they contribute to a range of scripts that span the world.

(For the original Constituency application, look here.)

Participants in IDRU deliberate together to set policy. As the Mission statement describes, IDRU devolves control of Internet futures to local linguistic communities – at the same time, it coordinates where necessary across script groups globally.

Policy: Distribution

On the technical side, IDRU introduces a new distributed architecture. More importantly, individual script groups shoulder responsibility for the management of their own Internet space - that is both a challenge to serve their publics with fidelity and a birthright to command proudly.

Policy: Coordination

IDRU also coordinates across script groups where global policy is necessary. That includes preventing collisions in name space and providing system security.

IDRU makes international domain names (IDNs) available - today. That means you use your native language at both ends of the Internet address: IDN.IDN. To do that, IDRU enables international generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs), the part of the address after the dot - today.

And the domains are not limited to those based on country codes. IDRU enables the possibility for all TLDs - today.

We are pleased indeed to tell you how to reach IDRU - using TLDs in native scripts! Here is idru.org - in four native scripts. These are live gTLDs, currently accessible - today.

  • Cyrillic - Bulgarian: достъп.бг
  • Cyrillic - Russian: доступ.орг
  • Hebrew: גישה.ארג
  • Tamil: அய்டிஆர்யு.அமை
